Church School to Build the Level Two Atrium for Our 6-9 Year-Olds

Apr 1, 2024

by McKensie R.

The St. Mary Church School has been using the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to establish the faith in the minds and hearts of our 3-6 year-olds, and now would like to continue its heartful, hands-on approach in the 6-9 year-old classes. But what does that next class, the "level two atrium", consist of? To begin answering that question, let's explore how it connects to the level one atrium, which we already use with our 3-6 year-olds.

In the level one atrium, we aim to promote a fuller participation in liturgy and build up our relationship with God through prayer. As the children work in the level one atrium, they begin to wonder, “Who are you, God?” They are given materials to help them to ponder this question, presented in a most concrete and essential manner, as is fitting of the child’s development at this age. When the child leaves the level one atrium, they leave knowing about the loving Good Shepherd, Christ, who invites each of them as one of His most precious sheep to this very special meal of the Eucharist; this Good Shepherd, Christ, who wants to have deep relationship with them.

In the level two atrium (6-9 years old), the child begins to understand action and responsibility, and the reality of time. They begin to wonder, “What will my response to God be?” They begin to explore the gifts of God throughout time, starting with creation, and focusing in on incarnation. Revisiting parables and the level one materials, they analyze proper response and begin the process of moral formation. They continue their studies of the church, now also pondering confession, the bible, and the beginning of church history. The 3-6 year-old child who fell in love with their Good Shepherd now knows and appreciates His great gifts, and in the level (cont'd on p 7) (Atrium, cont'd) two atrium, this child may now deeply explore how best to respond to that reality throughout his or her life.

As St. Mary works to bring the level two atrium to our children, we acknowledge that much work lies ahead and would love the support of our wonderful community. Whether you have the gift of items to donate, skills to share, or time to give, all are appreciated.

To the right of this article are a few ideas that would be very helpful at this stage as we prepare the rooms. If you can assist in any way, please contact Stephanie T. or Jessica O.!
